About ghd hair straighteners

ghd is a brand that was born in 2001, it is a Yorkshire based, British owned company, set up by director Martin Penny, who has described himself as an “accidental entrepreneur”. A hairdresser friend suggested Mr Penny should buy the rights, to some styling irons he’d been sent by a South Korean inventor. The ghd hair styler was able to produce better performances than any other hair toll on the market.

To begin with, it was a hard sell. Hairdressers could not believe that there customer would be willing to pay £99 for hair straighteners, so many only took them on a sale or return policy. Things soon changes, hairdressers and clients throughout the UK fell in love with them, and sets of ghds went flying of shelf – people could not get a enough of them.

Within two year ghd had expended into Australia, South Africa, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia. Sales had reached £12 million a year and ghd decided to sponsor channel 4 show The Salon. In 2004 ghd released there first Pink hair straighteners – this was in conjunction with Breakthrough Breast Cancer and help to raise money by donating £10 from every sale to the charity. Since this intilal release ghd have gone to launch 5 more Limited Edition Pink Stylers.

Over the past few years, ghd have also launched a number of other Limited Edition straighteners over the summer and Christmas periods. These have included the ghd Dark or Pure, ghd Roll Bag, ghd Glamour Box, Purple ghds and the current ghd Precious. These have also been very popular and tend to sell out fast in hair salons, and online.

ghd awarded Super Brand status in 2008/2009, and the name ghd has become synonymous with hair straighteners themselves. In fact customer don’t if a salon does hair curling, they ask if they do ghd curls. ghd now has a dedicated product range called ghd Thermodynamics – which is all based around heat protection and looking after the condition of your hair.

ghd regularly sponsors up and coming designers at London Fashion Week and other top catwalk shows throughout the world, including Paris, Durban and New York. They have also sponsors of Australia’s Next Top Model. ghd have also won a number industry awards, such as ‘best hairstyling gadget’ and ‘ultimate hairstyling gadget’ in Cosmopolitan Awards 2008. The company goes from strength to strength as the product innovates and follows and creates key fashion trends – which is carried out by the ghd Directive.

Watch out for fake ghds

Unfortunately, when a brand grows in popularity, it can be susceptible to counterfeiter. Since 2006, there have been a large number of fake ghds showing up on the internet and making there way onto UK shores. These fake ghd hair straighteners are made in China and other part of the far east. The websites that sell them often include ghd in there domain name and use Google sponsored adverts to promote there websites. They have also spent alot of time and money manipulating search engines results in Yahoo and Google, so they even appear near the top in natural search results. Counterfeit ghds have also been found being sold at car boot sales and fairs, the sellers even have the cheek to justify them being real, by pretending they are stolen rather tan fake – trust me they are fake.

They often sell there fake products from anything between £50 and £70, if they are targetting Austraila or the USA they alter the currency sign to dollars. These counterfiet goods, are not only illegal, they are also dangerous. Goverment websites and Trading Standards have posted articles on there websites, warning people about the dangers of fake ghds. They have been know to catch on fire, cause electric shocks and severley damage hair. They are basically cheap straighteners which have been fitted into a body that looks like a genuine ghd hair straightener. Not only do they sell the latest ghd Iv Styler models, they also reproduce out stock gift set which were very popular – these include the ghd Rare, ghd Purple, ghd Dark or Pure and various models of ghd Pink. So, you have been warned, please be careful and don’t get tricked into buying from one of these websites.
